Oscars 2017 winners list: ‘Moonlight’ wins Best Picture after bizarre gaffe, ‘La La Land’ takes home 6

The 89th Annual Academy Awards were a mix of humour and political commentary, with critical favourite La La Land taking home the bulk of the Oscars. It wasn’t quite the runaway that many had predicted, however, and while presenting the final award of the night for Best Picture, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway made a major gaffe after a production error.

Dunaway announced La La Land as the winner, but midway through the acceptance speech Beatty awkwardly tried to explain that it was, in fact, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight that won the top prize.

It turns out that Beatty was handed the Best Actress envelope, which listed Emma Stone, one of the stars of La La Land, as the winner.

It’s clear in the ceremony footage that Beatty was confused by what he read on the card.

Several awards were spread among other contenders, including Mel Gibson’s little-known Hacksaw Ridge (film editing, sound mixing) and Moonlight (adapted screenplay).

In the acting arena, La La Land‘s Stone won Best Actress, while Best Actor race went to Manchester By the Sea’s Casey Affleck (beating out Canadian Ryan Gosling).
